The best idea I’ve heard in the past day or so following the Islamist terror attacks in Paris last week: invoke Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization charter, which says that an attack on one member is an attack on all; build a Desert Storm-sized military coalition; and march into Syria and Iraq, led by precision airstrikes, and destroy the Islamic State.
Important: Russia needs to be warned to ground all of their air and ground forces that might interfere with NATO forces, or they will be targets as well.
I’d go farther. After the known IS forces are destroyed, I believe NATO forces need to take over parts of Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq to make sure that the Islamic State doesn’t reappear. If any combat elements of al-Qaeda or Iranian-sponsored forces interfere, such as Hezbollah, Hamas, or Boko Haram, they should be targeted as well. NATO needs to be the spearhead of a comprehensive anti-ISIS and anti-Islamist offensive.
It’s time we take off the gloves and destroy ISIS, al-Qaeda, and any other Islamist forces opposing the West. If we don’t do this, we’ll see Paris-style attacks in the U.S. very soon.
